Erie Canal and Montezuma Marshes

Erie Canal and Montezuma Marshes

A tandem team and driver pull an Erie Canal packet across the great Cayuga Marsh in this scene, sketched in watercolor from from the deck of the westbound boat. The raised towpath would have protected the animal teams and drivers from the annual inundations of the nearby Seneca River. The artist, British Lieutenant General Sir Henry William Barnard, was posted with his batallion in Canada from 1838 to 1842. (Courtesy of the Royal Ontario Museum.)
