1827 drawing by Increase Lapham of Orange Dibble’s “Machine for raising rocks &c. from Deep Cuts.” A notation indicates the sketch was made in Shippingport, Kentucky, where, at the age of 16, he was working as an assistant engineer on the Louisville and Portland Canal. The sketch is signed “IA Lapham Del.”, for “delineator” or draftsman. (Wisconsin Historical Society)
