Samuel Fenn Drawing

A lockpit for the Enlarged Erie Canal is a hub of activity in this 1855 fieldbook sketch by canal engineer Samuel Fenn. A surveyor, upper left, and rodman, center right, check levels while workers haul dirt and rubble up a makeshift wheelbarrow ramp to the top edge of the excavation. Two men on the floor of the pit position the timbers that will support the lock stonework. The ubiquitous whiskey jug is strategically positioned at the lower right. The figure at lower left may represent Fenn himself, busily taking notes or, perhaps, penciling this sketch. (New York State Archives)
