Boatbuilders began constructing vessels designed for the Erie Canal even before it was completely open. This item, reprinted from Niles Weekly Register in the Feb. 26, 1823 edition of the Geneva Palladium, describes how Durham boats that had been pressed into service were being replaced by those “built specially for the canal.” (New York Historic Newspapers)
