View on the Erie Canal

This 1831 watercolor by John William Hill, “View on the Erie Canal,” may be our finest contemporary image of Little Falls and its new aqueduct. The view is looking to the south across the Mohawk River. A solitary boat crosses the aqueduct. Meanwhile, an industrious group of men, wielding sledgehammers and a crowbar, breaks up an exposed layer of stone in the foreground. (The New York Public Library)
